Playing with 4 Basic Tangles Online Session
Yesterday we had the first live online session of the year with the Art Clubbers (my live online classes are entirely free for Clubbers). Nothing more appropriate than starting the new year and new decade fresh with some of the most basic tangles around: Crescent Moon, Hollibaugh, Printemps and Florz, all deconstructed by Zentangle, Inc.
We started with the classic Z string, that is, a simple large Z inside the tile that divides the paper into 4 triangular sections. For each of the different tangles, I applied a different “Art Enhancer”. For example, with Crescent Moon we saw how varying the distance between the lines can create completely different effects.
With Hollibaugh, we explored how varying the size and width of the stems can create some pretty cool results:
With Printemps, we explored the concept of “3-dimensionalizing” by adding Echo Lines to each one of the spirals.
And finally, I showed a very short introduction to Romanancy, which is an advanced technique which makes grids and ribbons curve and turn. We should definitely explore that more!
Next we discussed shading, and I showed participants how to consider shading over an entire section or each element, using graphite pencil and blending stump.
The session had 52 participants working live with me through Zoom meeting app, and it lasted just about 1:40 hours. Here you can see some of the work they did during class — SUPER fun to see their different styles and results.
Here is my final tile which I completed after the class was over. I couldn't resist adding a few little extra hatched lines here and there, and super dramatic shading.
Here is a close-up for you to inspect:
I also completed yesterday my second slot of the Tangle-a-day calendar, including the Size Variation Hollibaugh. Loving this idea of tangling outside the box and adding a bijou in the center instead.
