Single Pen Hatching Part 1 of a series

The super exciting class series on how to create Zentangle using a SINGLE PEN (no pencil for shading!) started today, February 19, 2021. This is a class near and dear to my heart because hatching with a nib pen was one of the first formal art techniques I ever learned as a young girl.

We started by showing some examples of classic engraved pictures from 16th century such as Albrecht Durer - you can see the entire iconic Rhinoceros picture above and the detail of below.

I also showed several other pictures from the 16 century and we analyzed different styles of hatching — very different from the traditional cross hatching.

Below you can see some examples of the different styles of hatching that I extracted from these century old engravings.

We also did some practical work and tested several of our pens to find the ultimate ideal pen, one which would give us the necessary different widths of hatching.

After finding the ideal pen, we went on to do some exercises to practice and warm up.

And finally, we explored some different styles of hatching to discover our own preferences.
