Pop-up Mechanism Booklet

Continuing my latest obsession with pop-ups and paper mechanics. Watching a ton of videos on different mechanisms, my goal is to understand the differences well enough so that I can create pieces intuitively using Zentangle patterns. Many thanks to fantastic paper engineers that post instructional videos online such as Duncan Birmingham and Matthew Reinhart.

I create a little handmade booklet for the samplers. Here are some of my favorite ones:

V-fold in arch form. The secret is to measure and mark the gluing location before cutting the inside of the arch.

Parallel mechanisms covered with disguising panels. “Moving arms” come out when you open the card.

Floating layers with three pedestals to hold it up. The secret is to create all three pedestals the same size.

These parallel folds have extra panels added to them through slits.

Parallel folds with cuts on the card itself, also called Box Layers.

These V folds are glued over a central glue folds. Extensions make it possible to extend far beyond the original mechanism.
