Tangle Transitions Video Lesson

On the wake of the enormously successful Bijou Raffle lesson (which allows the universe to choose tangles and Art enhancers for you), one request I got was to discuss the transitions between two tangles. It was a super fun question to think about and this lesson is the result.

I came up with a list of 5 essential ways to work with the string — I'm sure there are more — and play with the TRANSITION between one tangle and the next one.

I used the basic combo of tangles/string used in the classic Zentangle 101 lesson: Hollibaugh, Printemps, Bales and Crescent moon, worked over a simple Z string. Using this combo, I worked each of the examples to show how an artist can tackle different transitions.

Here is the first phase, where the string is practically ignored. Although this is very much the approach used by a beginner tangler, it should not be neglected, because 1) it can produce a great amount of Zen flow, that meditative state where the time stands still; 2) it can be used for other more complex transitions.

In the lesson, I'm also showing how to exercise and practice between two tangles that you are not familiar with — in this example you can see the various different phases between Paradox and Florz. (I love using my Apple Pencil on my Ipad Pro to do these kinds of practice exercises, it's a great tool).

Although I do many of my own practice runs on the ipad, the lesson is NOT focused on digital resources, you can use whatever media you like. I also show how to do the same exercises using regular pen over paper.

The lesson also comes with a few case studies as a bonus, and printable recipe cards with the 5 transition stages.

I think it's going to be tremendously fun to see what people can do with this lesson, combined with the Bijou Raffle lesson. Can't wait to see!
