Last Thursday I finally had the long awaited lesson on how to create these Flowing Frameworks, images that resemble whimsical architectural landscapes. This was inspired by my visit to Rome in 2019, but only now — after grooming the Clubbers with other more intermediate lessons, was I able to teach it with great results.

We started the class by analyzing and understanding this unique kind of string, made of foreground, middle-ground and background, which is key to the landscape effect. Clubbers and I spent quite a bit of time creating little mockup string, complete with shading instruction, so that the project was clear from the beginning.

We then developed the project design with tons of auras, using 3-dimensional cues such as spherifying and foreshortening to produce the structure for the piece. Below you can see the work in progress:

The lesson lasted 3 hours and we covered extensive shading techniques, which is fundamental for any 3-dimensional picture.

Some 60 Clubbers participated in this class, and what I liked the most about it is that I divided the entire group into breakout rooms, so that the smaller groups of people could bond and share their insights while drawing. Was such a blast!
