XLnt Tangling Lesson
Yesterday Art Clubbers and I had a really fun class. We used focused on Embedded Letters, the tangles XLnt (Jody Genovese) and Crestfallen (Antonine Koval).
This design includes a “self-overlapping string”, meaning a string section where the tangle goes under itself, a concept I've been playing with. It also included an Embedded Letter inspired by Zentangle's video on the topic.
We started by exploring the Self-overlapping string and different ways to work it in a rule of third's composition:
Once the string was set in place, we tangled the Embedded Letter surrounded by Opus (Zentangle).
After shading with colored pencils, we started tangling using XLnt tangle, exploring heavily the concept of Edgework (treating the edges of the string section with care to make the piece look more 3-dimensional).
We also explored Detached shadows to make the pieces look like they were floating above the background:
After all the shading was completed, we then completed the piece with Crestfallen (Antonine Koval), complete with hatched stripes and shading.
To finish off the piece we added tiny gems using colored pencils!
The session was over 3 hours and we had about 70 or so participants. Super super fun, look at that beautiful art!
