Tangled Dragons

With Mother's Day looming in the horizon, I stopped today to think what it meant to be the mother of a teenage boy. I was thinking how much he has grown and remembering when he was little and would come to me asking "Mama, can you draw me a dragon?"

I'd oblige of course, and would draw a quick sketch of what seemed more like a cartoon cow with horns, but he was always delighted. We collected dragons of all kinds, especially figurines.

Being mother to a boy means that you don't get to draw flowers and unicorns, but yet dragons, dinosaurs and superheroes. Being mother to a boy is a so unbelievably different than being mother to a girl, as I can clearly see when I compare notes with other moms.

Thinking of all this, I thought I'd try my hand at some dragons again, but now on my own terms, tangled and knotted.

The first one didn't turned out exactly as knotted as I wanted it to be.

The second one is a bit better, I like it!

I added a little shading on the overlaps, and am REALLY happy with it.

Interesting how sometimes these drawings just seem to come from who knows where. I guess our subconscious plays a much higher role than we can imagine in determining what and how we create art.

These are for you, my young tangled, knotted dragon, I love you more than words can say, and so honored to be your mother!
