This lovely swirly tangle is called Narwal, named and deconstructed by Sam Taylor. I just loved the way it looks so dimensional, even when you just have the line art.
This is the line art for the shaded picture above. I usually draw the line art using Micron Sakura pens over Bristol smooth paper. The original measures about 7 inches square.
These two studies were made for the ebook. The Narwal is essentially a cone, however, it can be straight or wavy.
This picture shows the beginning of the composition. I like to shade the foreground objects first and move to the background.
This incomplete study shows a closeup. Notice what a difference it makes to have the shaded pearls versus the non-shaded pearls.
