Digital well and Scena

After my last experiment with Procreate and digital tangling (see the last post here), I got encouraged and decided to continue playing with it. This is a digital version heavily inspired by the latest video by Zentangle founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas (A Tile from Start to Finish, watch the youtube video here). I wondered if the digital version would bring as much Zen flow as a traditional version would (and the answer is yes). Here is my slightly modified version:

I love the way that Maria uses the tangle Well, in a slightly fractalized way, instead of inside a grid as the original step-out shows. I used a digital version of the brown pen to create that portion (if you are into Procreate, use the Studio Pen for a really fun width variation), and then shaded it with a modified soft airbrush in gray and white). Here is the center portion, isolated:

I also worked over a gray square background instead of a round white round, and I feel that the gray really brought out the beauty of the brown pen. Since I elected to work on gray, I added Scena in white, using the same Procreate Studio Pen. I LOVE Scena, it's one of my favorite tangles. I shaded it with a gray modified airbrush pen to give it some dimensionality. Here is the background layer, isolated:

If you are not familiar with digital programs such as Procreate, the thing that I like the most about them is that it allows you to isolate parts of the drawing in LAYERS. Think of it as transparent sheets that can be layered on top of each other. You can turn layers on or off, and that allows you to play with a certain aspect of the drawing without worrying if you will affect the rest.

I love digital drawing and tangling, but I think now it's time to go back to some good ol’ paper and pen!
