Antique in ink

Last week's focus tangle at the Shading Zentangle Facebook group was Antique, a tangle deconstructed by Kathy Barringer here). I actually finished this tile TWO DAYS ago, but didn't have time to post! Talk about being busy. The challenge also called for exploring contour hatching, which is slightly different than cross hatching. Contour hatching has no CROSSED lines, the hatching goes along the shape of the object, enhancing the form.

It started with the line-art:

I used a Hollibaugh string. As you can see the drawing is fairly simple. I have to confess that I am not in love with this pattern, it's a bit too floral for me.

The second step was to add some "rounding", that is, adding weight to some of the lines and rounding off the corners.

Finally, I added contour hatching, which is the fun part for me. Notice how the hatching goes in the same direction as the shape, whatever that might be, and it (almost) never crosses other hatching.

I like it! There is no other type of shading whatsoever, no graphite or marker. The entire tile only took me an hour to complete from beginning to end, which is much less than I normally do with traditional graphite shading.

I will have to try this again!
