I have to confess, I have never been a huge fan of drawing on black tiles or black paper. Shading on black paper with white pencil makes it look like those old photo negatives, and things look so eery. However, since attending CZT Seminar 23, I saw the potential, and bought two packs of black tiles in the hopes of playing with them when I got home. These are the preliminary studies:
I used white and gold pen, and also colored pencils. I liked it, but I felt like this technique is mostly flat and doesn't convey the 3-D depth I am used to.
Then.... something magical happened. See those studies there with narwal on the left side? I played with it a bit more and this is what came out:
It actually looks like it's GLOWING!!!! I named this technique "Glow on the dark". The effect is sooo metallic, but there is no metallic pen here, it's all white gel pen and white charcoal pencil.
I LOVE IT!
The question now -- the jury is still out there -- can this be applied to a whole tile?
My two first tentatives were NOT fabulous:
Ruutz, Shattuck, Zinger and Bales tangles. It's alright, but still.... Doesn't quite have that same magical glow as the studies had.
Another attempt, this time with bolder shapes, using Yew-dee:
A little bit better, but still not quite there, doesn't look quite right. I like the sphere a lot, it looks very metallic!
